History of Chili’s Restaurant Chain

The very first Chili’s was opened up by Larry Levine in 1975 in Dallas, Texas. At the time, the concept of a casual restaurant/bar offering full service was very new – with Chili’s being one of the very first businesses to showcase this concept. They were first solely famous for their burgers that were different from any other restaurants around. From there, the rest is history. Brinker International bought the 23 Chili’s locations in 1983. During that same year Chili’s became a publicly traded company. It was not until 1984 that they expanded their menu offerings to include salads, Buffalo wings and chicken sandwiches. Perhaps the most innovative item that they introduced was the sizzling fajitas that instantly became a hit. In 1986, Chili’s became famous for their mouth-watering Baby Back Ribs. In 1991, Chili’s became an international company, with its first restaurant opening up in Canada. From there, Chili’s began opening in many other countries including Mexico, Egypt and South Korea. By 2009, Chili’s had 200 restaurants in other countries and more than 1,000 total restaurants open.
